Updates!

I have a few loose ends from things I was posting about that I kinda stopped posting about. lol. Let me tell you what's been going on!

The Flaxseed gel
I last made a large batch, then forgot to refrigerate it and lost it.  I had run out of marshmallow root and went back to using commercial products. I decided to order more in a 1lb bag, rather than the "bulk by the scoop" purchase from Glut.  I also got some grapefruit seed extract, some aloe vera gel and some beeswax pellets to try making a super concoction of epic dopeness.  O_o We'll see how it goes. I got my Marshmallow root yesterday.

My PCOS
I stopped taking Metformin in November and had been pretty OK. But over the past months I have noted a resurgence of Acne, and my cycle has been shifting backwards and forwards by up to 5 days. Randomly. Back to the old way of life. So I am back on the attack with natural remedies.  I have been drinking green smoothies almost everyday, eliminating upwards of 80% of dairy and gluten, and made some drs appointments to get checked out again. I have been washing with raw honey and using grapeseed oil mixed with geranium and tea tree oils at night or in the morning, depending on how my skin looks. I have been on the hunt for a full coverage liquid or cream foundation to use under my mineral powder as well. I got a sample of Nars put on at Sephora.  NO GO!  breakout within the 4 hrs it took me to take it off.  But my hyper-pigmentation from the past few months is back bad enough to need daytime coverage. My Maybelline Mineral power foundation has been discontinued, and I had a few bottles left I found on Amazon, but my color, natural beige is getting harder to find.  I tried Revlon Color stay- which I found on the acne boards, but I have much more yellow in my skin than any of their colors.  I may try out Prescriptives.  Suggestions?  I am a yellow gal. Pinks and cools don't work for me :-/
Nars was a little warm for me but I was a Syracuse, med/deep shade in their line. I use Mode mineral powder in "honey amber" and it is like, dead on!  I'm hella yellow. lol But I don't get full coverage from it. Even when I stack it with a little water it's gone in a few hrs.

Coloring my hair
So I lied about coloring my hair again... lol. I have been obsessed with Orange makeup for about 6 months now.  I really like the fresh look I can create with it, but had been having trouble finding an orange I liked, that would not transfer onto my braces, that was not too red...
Then Sephora came out with their Pantone palate for the color of the year, tangerine tango. I saw swatches and fell in love.  Had to have it! Also... So there was a girl behind the counter of a fast food joint who had on pink eye makeup and hazel eyes close to my color.  And it looked DOPE lol. I was probably staring at her a little too hard lol. But it encouraged me to try makeup to enhance my eye color more.
Soooooo down the rabbit hole I went lol. I won't lie.  I did some crazy stuff to my hair over the past two weeks.  What had happened was I got the orange and was like yeahhhh... Love it.
Then I was like.. My hair shoooooo does look dark... I can tone it a little warmer with some selective permanent color. I choose Garnier Nutrisse Haircolor, 535 Medium Golden Mahogany Brown Chocolate Caramel and put it in about 8 places. But That sucker ONLY took on the roots!  So then I had light roots and dark ends in places.  The rinse I had used many moons ago did not budge at all and the color deposited on top of it, making my ends practically black.

I let a day go by and then went and got Clairol's instant whip 5 shade lifter.  I had to leave that in for the full 30 min to even get some of the black out. I was left with slightly lighter hair, and still darker ends in most places.

I let 3 days go by lol. THEN I used some powder packet of color remover mixed with level 20 developer and attacked the dark ends once and for all.  In the process I lost some of the red hue I was going for- but I got that dark black off the ends!  And now I like it. It's not even a huge change but I think the orangeness will be fun for the summer.  It's not all over, maybe 50% of my hair, and so far it feels fine.  No texture change, not feeling dry... But I will make sure I pay close attention to my ends.
In other news I am gardening this year again.  So far I have gotten materials to prepare 5 small beds, and I am already growing onion, collards and parsley.  carrots are going in this weekend, and I have a few pepper plants and herbs for pots. It's been so warm I think it's safe for them to go outside now.

I am also going to start dating again this spring lol.  Maybe TMI for here, but hey. I plan to have fun and get back out there with some intent. Meaning I'll "try" to meet people and network rather than this happenstance state I've been in.

I'll have a braces update for you after my next appt on April 11.  Not going so well, I'm ending month 7 and still no bottom braces.  AND I will not be getting them next week either.

Ya'll Ready for spring/Summer?  What else are you up to?

Bad news blues ( or is it reds and dark browns?)

I was so excited to get the great info Nuri posted yesterday because....
My face is breaking out again :-(
(and I think she has magical powers to know what I need to read and when lol)

I get bumps mainly on my chin and cheeks- the woman's hormonal adult acne zone.
And because I have a couple culprits I have to eliminate them all!  I was on a precipitous clear skin ledge apparently, still fighting this very common symptom of PCOS.

Culprit Numero Uno: Vatika Oil.
Yes, I tried to go back- even after declaring in a video that it was bad news for my skin. My hair just loved it soooo much that I thought I could sneak a little into my routine and just keep my face clean meanwhile. No, fail, negative.  Even my shoulders and chest doth protest- so I am pointing 8 fingers at this cursed (whhhyyyyyyy!) miracle oil.

Culprit 2: Mac Mineralize powder Foundation.
Now this just sucks... My skin had been doing so much better that I thought I could switch to a light coverage, high quality powder.  I usually use Maybelline Mineral Power liquid foundation (I must mix natural beige and pure beige to get a good match though) and had had no issues except that it is a little heavy on days I don't need it, or it's hot outside.  So I splurged on a Mac brush and powder compact in Medium Plus.  And right around that same time = small bumps.  They had escalated to larger bumps by the time I ceased using vatika and the powder both so I can't let it off the hook.

Culprit 3: Stress and hormones
A few dramatic changes occurred in a short amount of time for me (sick family member, large baby-shower I planned, and an 8 yr old in the house for the summer) and I am on Metformin at 1000mg a day now.  I typically get stress bumps on my usually clear forehead- and low-and-behold... a bump.  And the Metformin should be helping and not harming.  I do know that my hormones have been HELLA whacky since I got on this stuff but I haven't had any troubling side effects nor increased acne until now.  This may just be a part of that hormonal cycle I was previously on.  I'm going up to 2,000 mg of Metformin next month so I am playing the watch and wait game with these meds for now.

So I have cut back to bare minimum on my face for the past few days. no makeup, 2 washes a day now, a moisturizer and what I had left of my topical antibiotic and Tazorak. I got a referral to a new derm, but I don't think I'm going to go just yet.  FIRST I plan to try Beantown Brown's bentonite mixture. My partner blogger has beautiful skin and is on the same page as me when it comes to empowering yourself to change the things under your control.  So I WILL work on this and master it.  I am also looking back at the comments you all had on my revealing Acne post.  Thank you for those- and keep them coming!

My Face vs My Hair

I've been saying for months now that I was going to talk about my battle with adult acne.  So sorry it has taken so long.  It's one of those problems I don't want to admit I have but that a lot of adult women go through.  I'll take you all through my battle with me so you can see what I have learned and done to help myself.

I had mild acne as a teen. Nothing that some Oxy 10, and some Stridex pads could not treat.  In college around my sophomore year I had a bout of severe acne, probably driven in part by stress, and it drove me to see a dermatologist.  I had breakouts on my forehead and cheeks that would not go away with regular topical treatment.  I was 19 then so I didn't know much about doctors or treatments so when I was prescribed a twice daily antibiotic to take, I just tried to take it as ordered.  It made me sooooo sick!  I was supposed to eat when I took it but I always wanted to vomit within a half hour of taking the pills.  I stopped taking them out of necessity and instead only used the accompanying topical antibiotic.  I didn't tell the doctor or go back there again and my skin eventually became manageable again with topical treatments.  Those included Cetaphil soap and tea tree oil- recommendations from my mom.

A few years later, out of school and on my own health insurance, my skin had started to have more breakouts than clear days and I again went to a dermatologist for that and a few other reasons.  That doctor said I only had mild acne and prescribed Differen Gel.  She also told me that I have severe hyper-pigmentation due to my complexion and was not a good candidate for laser hair removal. (remember this for later!)

I took Differen gel for years.  That stuff was $60/ tube- with insurance! It kept my skin at bay for about 5 years through most of my 20s.  I stopped taking it occasionally when my prescriptions would run out or when I would run out of money for it.  Each tube lasted for 3-5 months.  In early 2008 I had ceased using it for about 6 months, and my skin was acting up.  On a regular annual physical visit I asked for a new prescription and it was granted with the note "Acne" as her one unhealthy remark.  THIS time, it did not work.  Not only did it not work, my skin got worse and worse.

Eventually I stopped using any drugs and tried re-setting my skin.  I used Tea tree oil and oil of Olay.  Then I used natural astringents, blemish sticks, alcohol, and even the evil proactive, (both formulas!) over the course of the next year and a half.  Nothing worked and my skin got yet worse.  My self confidence began to crumble and I complained incessantly to my boyfriend.  I saw my mom for the holidays and she was, for lack of a better word, appalled at my new face.  I saw my dad around that worst point and he said "Nia, you used to smile, and now you are fading away."  And it was true.  I was trying to hide the bumps and redness with makup and it wasn't working.  I had begun to try and hide myself as an alternative.

Around that same time I was diagnosed with Poly-cystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).  The acne was a symptom though I had very few others.  Weight gain was one of those other symptoms. I had gained 20 pounds in the prior 6 months, though I was still thin.  But the sudden weight gain worried me and I went to the doctor to find out what was going on.

At this point I was turning 30, had a face full of active acne and scars and had various other health issues related to the PCOS plaguing me.  I was sad and blaming myself for what was happening.  Like most people I felt that acne was caused by not caring for your skin properly, or washing the right way for the type of skin you had, or not wearing the right makeup.  I began doing research on acne and set a new years resolution to clear my face.  I found out more about PCOS, and I stopped eating sugar.  I found out more about acne and discovered that the blemishes on my chin were cystic and that their location and my age indicated that they were most likely caused by hormonal imbalance.  The topical solutions I had been trying for the past year would not have worked.  And the herbs and essential oils were not enough to really treat the problem.  Despite my past experiences with doctors and my mom's advice I decided that I again needed to see a dermatologist.

I searched high and low for a black dermatologist (because of my hyper-pigmentation and scars) and I went in with high hopes.  I thought I'd get laser treatments, peels and advanced care and knock it out!  I got there, and the doctor didn't even see me.  I saw a white nurse practitioner, and she stood 5 feet from me, writing on a notepad.  She prescribed me a 30 day treatment on an oral antibiotic, nightly treatment with Tazorac and daily treatment with Aczone.  I got some free samples and some coupons and walked out holding in tears.  I told myself it would not work and that they didn't understand how I felt.
But I took everything as prescribed anyway.  In a week, my face didn't hurt any more and the cysts were shrinking.  In a few more weeks the cysts were gone and I just had scars and a few small blemishes that would still come and go- the stuff I would treat topically before.

One of the requirements of the new aggressive treatment was that I only use very mild cleanser, if at all, a good moisturizer and only apply meds when my skin was dry. I decided to try oil cleansing and forgo soap.  I began using castor oil mixed with tea tree and rosemary oils in the shower and rinsing it off each morning.  Some oil would linger and act as my moisturizer for the day and I thus suffered no ill effects from the super drying Tazorac.

Today, my prescriptions have run out and I have not re-newed them.  My face is clear of the cystic acne, though I still get occasional blackheads and clogged pores.

Things I avoid include:
  • Soap
  • Olive oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Shea Butter
  • non-mineral based (regular) foundations
  • Talc
  • Topical alcohol or peroxide
  • Eating more than 25 grams of added sugar a day
  • Sleeping on the same pillowcase for more than a week
Things my skin prefers
  • Castor oil
  •  Mineral based makeup
  • gentle, manual exfoliating (washcloth or fingertips- no products with abrasives)
  • washing only once a day
  • Drinking more water every day
Pretty much I keep it simple.  You can see my skin in my last few posts and it looks nothing like it did.  I know now that if my acne begins spiraling out of control I need to look at internal reasons and check on my PCOS.  I did not go on the pill and don't plan too.  I'm 31 now and almost all the symptoms I began to notice regarding the PCOS have virtually disappeared.  I lost 15 of the 20 lbs I gained, everything is "regular" again and my skin is not running my life.

I encourage you to see a doctor if you are dealing with severe adult acne- and not just a dermatologist but your OBGYN or your GP.  And look up acne and its causes.  Different places indicate different causes and can allude to deeper health problems.  As my dad would say there is NO reason to walk around with acne this day and age.  Though I don't agree with treatments like Accutane, I do think that many deeper medical conditions can be treated by modifying your diet and balancing deficiencies where possible.  And a good doctor will work with you to find a treatment you are comfortable with.

I hope all this writing has helped some one.  Please share your stories and remedies in the comments.
