Curly twists on my bob

The last time I twisted my hair, I'd done it after I blew it out, and the ends would not hold!!  They were too blunt, unraveling and fuzzing out.  I was so disappointed!  So this time I did smaller twists on freshly washed and air dried hair.  I used Yes to Cucumbers conditioner as my leave in, sealed with castor oil.  I wore my hair out like that for a day- and twisted it dry the next day with no additional product.  It looked kinda icky... UNTIL I decided to roller set it on my small blue flexy rods.  I used Curls Goddess Curl Gel from Target to "wet" the ends of about 6 twists at a time, which I then coiled together to smooth before putting on the rollers.  This fixed the whole style!  Here it is the next day:

And a few pictures from the few days after:
I re-set it on the curlers quickly each night and got 6 days out of the twists before my twist out:
The red highlights.  Fading nicely!
See how my ends begin to revert back to my small curls once outside of the curlers for even a day.
So thennnnnn I went to a birthday party on the weekend and needed an up-do to show off some huge, fabulous earrings I got.  Me and my girls = All NATURAL.  Pressed, locked, twisted - Sexy ladies!

Don't matter if its long, short - do it do it!

[ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/whip-my-hair-lyrics-willow-smith.html ]

I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (whip it real good)
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth

Hop up out the bed turn my swag on
Pay no attention to them haters cuz we whip em off
and we aint doing nothing wrong
so dont tell me nothing, i'm just tryna have fun
so keep the party jumping

so whats up (yea)
And i'll be doing what to do
we turn our back
and whip our hair and just shake them off
shake them off, shake them off, shake them off

Don't let haters keep me off my grind
Keep my head up i know i'll be fine
Keep fighting until i get there
When i'm down and i feel like giving up

I whip my hair back and forth....(repeat)

I'ma get more shine than a little bit
Soon as i hit the stage applause im hearing it
whether its black stars black cars im feeling it
but can't none of them whip it like i do
I, i gets it in mmmm yea i go hard
when they see me pull up i whip it real hard
i whip it real hard, real hard,i whip it real hard

Don't let haters keep me off my grind
Keep my head up i know i'll be fine
Keep fighting until i get there
When i'm down and i feel like giving up

I whip my hair back and forth
I whip my hair back and forth (just whip it)
I whip my hair back and forth

All my Ladies if you feel me
do it do it whip your hair
Dont' matter if its long, short
do it do it whip your hair

All my Ladies if you feel me
come on do it do it whip your hair
Dont' matter if its long, short
do it do it whip your hair (your hair, your hair)

I whip my hair back and forth... (repeat!)

The hair of a Princess

I know it may be quite unorthodox to think of hair as like a clay, to be fashioned into a crown of sorts.  But with our hair- it holds forms and shapes and can be sculpted.  Men have been rocking boxes, gumbies and high-tops since the 80s.  No product needed.  It grows up and out and makes an intricate and unique decoration to top our lovely features. (Yes. I'm feeling very "black is beautiful"!) But I have been thinking- I am going to work on a few more of these over the winter.  They last a good week and styles like the princess braid, below, are work friendly.  (and by work friendly I don't mean "allowed" or "permissible", but rather not a distracting conversation piece.)

One of the hairstyles my BF loves, and I also got tons of FB comments on, is my princess braid.  I actually saw this in 17 magazine when I was pretty young, maybe 14, and they had a picture of the up and coming Tyra Banks with her brown colored hair fashioned into a french braid around her head.  Eureka! I had never really thought of my hair that way- as something that could be intricate and feminine in a large pattern... but it would be yeaaaars before I also let go of the straight pre-requisite too.
Here's my version of the princess braid.

But here is what prompted this post- I was watching TV and saw this girl.
How dope is her hair???!!  I rewound the show and literally took pictures of my TV- lol.

Her hair reminded me of the girl from the Noisettes, Shingai Shoniwa. She is and English singer of Zimbabwean descent (wikipedia). Read/see more HERE on Fly and HERE on Franchesca.net and HERE on ManeandChic.  I have seen her videos and images on occation, though I can't say I'm a true fan of the Noisettes music.  I always try to remember her name so I can look up her hair.  She, (before Janelle monae) creates beautiful, sculptural crowns with her hair and I just love it.

Here are some of my favorites real quick...

My Red Hair

Soooooo.... I put the color in my hair a few weeks ago and am just now happy to share it :-/
I have been waiting for it to fade down to something like I wanted.  Alas, it came out RED and not red-head-orange like I wanted.  I got a semi permanent rinse that is supposed to wash out in 28 washes- Garnier HerbaShine Haircolor Kit - Medium Auburn Brown.

BUT first - let me share with you the true color and growth of my highlighted hair (originally colored on June 3rd).  I finally caught some shots to show  you what I was seeing in vanity lights, but could never capture in all the other shots I took for the blog.

THIS  is how bright my highlights had gotten, and how much my hair had grown:

Yikes right?  Especially if I combed it out or was wearing it stretched.

So something had to be done, right?  In came the herbashine.  I picked a med/dark color, knowing it would fade.  Followed the directions, (got dye all over my bathroom lol.) Ladies, that mess came out soooooo red.  Like RED:
This is 2 days later. It was still hard to capture the color on camera, but this is a good representation.  I think I/it looked horrid! lol

So the days have passed and it has faded into something I rather like and much more what the box looked like.  It looks WAYYY better than before. It's actually growing on me more and more as it lightens and plays up my hazel eyes :-)

And I think I am done with dramatic color from now on. Bordum be damned.
